              Mary Pohlman's Credentials and Certifications

            I realized that I wanted to be a music teacher when I was fourteen. I began working toward that dream by continuing my piano studies and began voice lessons. I did my undergraduate work at Paterson State College, as a voice major and a piano/violin minor. My graduate work in Music Education continued at Montclair State College. I have a New Jersey teaching certificate in Music K-12.

            I began teaching in the Oakland Public School System in 1969. Throughout my years there I taught all grades, K-8. In 1972 I was appointed Director of Vocal and General Music. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, as director, I developed and implemented curriculum, helped in personnel selection, and was a liaison to the administrator. During my last several years, one of my areas of focus was the importance of music to the special needs children.

            After 35 years as an educator, I retired in June 2004. Realizing how much I miss teaching music I have decided to resume giving private piano lessons.

            In addition to teaching, I have served as music minister for several local churches, where I directed adult and youth choir, adult and youth hand bell choir, and was organist/pianist. I am currently Music Minister at the Amity Presbyterian Church here in Amity.
